A person who, in Quebec, has reasonable cause to believe that someone's life or physical integrity is in danger, and who renders assistance voluntarily, is considered a rescuer.
A rescuer may intervene at the scene of a fire or a road accident, for example.
The rescue must have taken place on or after January 1,
1977.
Measures provided for in the
Act to promote good citizenship allow rescuers who suffer physical or psychological injury or material damage to receive financial assistance.
Who Can Get Financial Aid?
The rescuer can receive financial assistance to help him/her through the difficult times he/she is going through.
In the event of the rescuer's death, the following people may also receive financial assistance:
These are all children under the age of
18.
The spouse is the person who is in one of the following situations:
- is married to or in a civil union with the rescuer
- has been living with the rescuer for at least
3 years, or has been living with the rescuer for at least
3 years and one of the following circumstances occurs or has occurred:
- a child has been or will be born of this union
- they have jointly adopted a child
- one of them has adopted a child of the other
A dependent of a deceased rescuer is a person for whom the rescuer provided more than
50% of the needs.
